DID YOU KNOW?

In the 1950s through the 1970s, the area was known as a "haven for asthma sufferers" and that it was "long noted for the beneficial qualities of its pure air" and had a "reputation as a health resort" or a "reputation for clean mountain air". Tujunga was seen as having a "near-Switzerland setting – high and dry."

In 1957, Coronet called Tujunga "the most healthy place in the world," and that publicity brought a flood of inquiries into the office of the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce, hundreds a month. In 1963, the area was seen as "famous for its climate beneficial to asthma sufferers".

MORE ABOUT SUNLAND

Sunland, CA is a quiet, semi-rural neighborhood nestled at the edge of the San Fernando Valley, right where the city meets the foothills of the Angeles National Forest. Known for its small-town vibe, mountain views, and strong sense of community, Sunland offers a peaceful retreat from the fast pace of Los Angeles while still being close enough for an easy commute. With access to the 210 freeway and neighboring communities like Tujunga, Shadow Hills, and La Crescenta, it’s an ideal spot for those who want space, nature, and a tight-knit atmosphere.

Sunland is characterized by a mix of older ranch-style homes, cozy bungalows, and hillside properties—many with large lots, horse stables, and mature trees. There’s a rustic charm here that sets it apart from more urban parts of the Valley, and locals love it for that exact reason. Whether you’re into gardening, hiking, or just enjoying a quieter, more laid-back lifestyle, Sunland has the room and rhythm to make it happen.

The community is diverse, down-to-earth, and proud of its unique identity. Locally owned businesses, family restaurants, and long-standing community institutions line Foothill Boulevard, the main thoroughfare that runs through Sunland and neighboring Tujunga. You’ll find everything from classic diners and Mexican bakeries to feed stores and vintage shops. The area also hosts community events, farmer’s markets, and seasonal festivals that bring people together and reflect its small-town spirit.

Outdoor lovers are especially drawn to Sunland for its proximity to the mountains and endless hiking trails. Just minutes away, you can explore Big Tujunga Canyon, ride horses in Shadow Hills, or escape for a weekend in the Angeles National Forest. It’s a paradise for anyone who loves fresh air and scenic views, with the added bonus of being only 30 minutes from the heart of LA.

Though it may fly under the radar, Sunland is a hidden gem that blends natural beauty, affordability, and a strong sense of home. It’s perfect for those who want the best of both worlds—a quiet life with easy access to everything Southern California has to offer.
