DID YOU KNOW?

In 1909, the Suburban Homes Company – a syndicate led by Hobart Johnstone Whitley, general manager of the board of control, along with Harry Chandler, H. G. Otis, M. H. Sherman and O. F. Brandt – purchased 48,000 acres of the Farming and Milling Company for $2.5 million. Henry E. Huntington extended his Pacific Electric Railway (Red Cars) through the Valley to Owensmouth (now Canoga Park).

The Suburban Home Company laid out plans for roads and the towns of Van Nuys, Reseda (Marian) and Canoga Park (Owensmouth). The rural areas were annexed into the city of Los Angeles in 1915.

Van Nuys, located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, is a vibrant and diverse community that blends rich history with modern convenience. Established in 1911 and named after entrepreneur Isaac Newton Van Nuys, the neighborhood was annexed by Los Angeles in 1915. The area has grown into a dynamic hub known for its multicultural atmosphere, thriving local businesses, and convenient access to Los Angeles. With a population of over 160,000, Van Nuys offers a welcoming environment for families, professionals, and retirees alike.

Beyond its historical charm, Van Nuys is home to a lively arts scene, bustling shopping districts, and beloved community events like the Van Nuys Arts Festival and the Sherman Oaks Street Fair. Whether you’re drawn to its central location, cultural diversity, or strong sense of community, Van Nuys is an exciting place to live on the West Coast.

Compared to other neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Van Nuys offers relatively affordable housing. As of January 2025, home prices in Van Nuys have decreased by 2.4% year-over-year, making it an attractive option for homebuyers who are looking for a more budget-friendly alternative to areas like Sherman Oaks or Studio City. Additionally, rental prices tend to be lower than in downtown LA, allowing renters to get more space for their money.

While the cost of living is still higher than the national average, Van Nuys provides a middle-ground option for those who want to be near the heart of Los Angeles without paying premium prices.
